Demutualisation FAQs
Following the take-over of Scottish Widows from Lloyds TSB in 2000, qualifying Policyholders were entitled to compensation for giving up their membership rights. Since 2000, Scottish Widows (through Scottish Widows Bank) has proactively attempted to locate these Policyholders so compensation can be paid to them.
1. How have Scottish Widows tried to trace Policyholders?
We have tried through a number of agencies to locate Policyholders. Over the years we have used reputable companies such as Experian, Equifax and the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) in our tracing of Policyholders.
2. How do I know if I am eligible for a claim?
If you have received a trace form from us, we would ask you to complete all details and return it in the pre-paid envelope to Scottish Widows Bank (FAO – Gordon Kruszewski). We will assess the claim and within 12 weeks you will either receive a cheque in the post, or a letter confirming you are not eligible for a payment.
If you do not have a trace form, contact us by using the information form provided. We will forward a trace form to you for completion. Upon return of the form, we will assess your claim and advise you within 12 weeks if you are eligible.
3. What information do you need from me when I contact you?
- Full name (and maiden name if applicable)
- Date of birth
- National Insurance No
- Current address
- Address in June 1999
- Policy number
- Reference number on trace form
- Phone number
4. I have already returned a trace form but have not received my cheque – what is the update?
It may take up to 12 weeks to process the claim, so please bear with us. If you have returned a trace form then it is likely it is being progressed. If you require an update on your case, contact us by using the information form provided and we will be in touch within a few days to update you. For information we will require from you see Q3.
5. How much money will I get?
At the moment we can’t confirm whether you are due to receive any money as it depends on the kind of policy that was held at the time. However, if you are due anything, it will be at least £500 plus interest.
6. I saw the press coverage and remember that I was a Scottish Widows customer in 2000, but I didn’t get one of these forms. Could I be due anything?
It may be that you were paid back in 2000 or the type of policy you held may not have been eligible for any compensation. However, it’s possible that you are one of the people we’re looking for and haven’t been able to trace you. Contact us by using the information form provided. We will write to you very soon, either to send you a trace form, or confirm that you were paid already or were not eligible for payment.
7. I think my deceased spouse/relative was a policyholder – can I make a claim under their inherited estate?
Yes – any money due to qualifying members who are now deceased will be payable to their estate. Please contact us if you think your deceased spouse/relative may have been due a windfall payment. Please be aware that in order to be sure we are paying out to the correct person, we may need to see certain documentation before we can release the funds.
8. I have received a trace form asking for lots of personal information, but it looks like a photocopy. Is there some kind of scam going on?
Don’t worry, these are absolutely genuine. Please send the form back in the pre-paid envelope provided to allow us to check whether you are due any money.
9. I’ve received a letter from ProSearch, what do I need to do?
Please fully complete the form providing as much information as possible and return to ProSearch. Upon receipt, the eligibility of your claim will be assessed (i.e. are you the correct person). If your claim is successful you will receive your cheque within 12 weeks.
10. I’ve received a letter from ProSearch but do not agree to pay the 12.5% fee.
This fee has been agreed between Scottish Widows and ProSearch as being reasonable payment for the work they have had to do to trace our missing customers.
Please note that we add interest backdated to August 2000 to all windfall payments. This is more than twice the 12.5% fee so you will still receive more than the original amount of compensation. The interest is not counted for the purpose of the 12.5% deduction.
If you feel you should not have to pay this fee (for example, because Scottish Widows has had your current details for some time, or because you have returned previous trace forms), please contact ProSearch in the first instance as they will be happy to discuss this with you.
Please note
If you have submitted, or are about to submit a claim for a demutualisation payment, we currently aim to respond to all queries within 12 weeks.
If you have already submitted a claim, please do not re enter your details. We thank you for your patience at this time.
