“It's great to hear our athletes are currently on track to achieve one of the nations' greatest medal hauls at an Olympic Games - what a way to finish ahead of London 2012”
Britain's performance in the cycling and sailing at these Games has been fantastic and I've no doubt exceeded everyone's expectations. Yesterday afternoon our British men's cycling pursuit team Bradley Wiggins, Paul Manning, Geraint Thomas and Ed Clancy delivered a superb gold medal performance. Not only did they break their own 4000m world record - they also beat Denmark by 6.7 seconds. The team have now secured Great Britain our 11th cycling medal.

Also, great news this morning from the sailing as Britain's Paul Goodison has just won gold in the laser class finishing ahead of Sweden. This puts Great Britain in 3rd position overall on the medal ranking table behind the USA. Goodison will join the rest of the British medal winners returning from the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games in the recently confirmed victory parade through the streets of London on the 16 October. It's great to hear our athletes are currently on track to achieve one of the nations' greatest medal hauls at an Olympic Games - what a way to finish ahead of London 2012!

Britain's super-heavyweight David Price is guaranteed a boxing medal after his opponent was forced to retire in their quarter-final bout on Monday and Team GB's gold medal favourite Phillips Idowu has secured his place in Thursday's triple jump final along with Jade Johnson (long jump) and Goldie Sayers (javelin) who have made it into their respective finals later this week. Jan Frodeno from Germany has gone on to win gold in an exciting men's triathlon race and Britain's Christine Ohuruogu is still the top favourite for a strong medal performance in the 400m.
