Sarah wins Gold at the World Cup

Sarah StoreyScottish Widows Ambassador for London 2012 Sarah Storey, MBE cycled her way to an outstanding Gold medal victory ahead of China and the USA in the final of the Women's 3km pursuit at the Paralympic World Cup in Manchester on Friday 9th May 2008.

With over 400 competitors from 45 different countries competing for 175 medals across four sports, the city and record crowds that gathered in Manchester for the event were given a real preview of the Beijing Paralympic Games later this year. And once again, the athletes on show rose to the occasion to deliver in true style.

The final of the Women's Pursuit was a collector's item, with Fang Zhou from China deciding that she couldn't beat Sarah Storey by traditional tactics and countering with a very aggressive approach to the race, attacking her with a very fast start. She very rapidly closed Sarah down to perhaps 60 metres, but perhaps inevitably the Chinese rider couldn't quite finish the job and she blew quite spectacularly, with Sarah able to catch her within the 2nd kilometre.

Says Sarah

" It's a great end to a series of competitions which I have been involved in since March and the last of the big track events before the Beijing Games! Now it's onwards and upwards for selection and competition at the Beijing Paralympic Games"

Congratulations Sarah!
