Douglas Johnson, Director of Public Affairs

Douglas joined Scottish Widows in 1972. His early career as an Actuary later developed into leading multi-disciplinary change programmes including the setting up of the infrastructure for Scottish Widows Direct Distribution channel and the development of a new range of healthcare products. In the late 90’s, he was Director of Client Services and New Business Division where he was heavily involved with the integration of Scottish Widows and Lloyds TSB.
Prior to the Lloyds TSB takeover, Douglas was also a Board Director for Royal Scottish Assurance, the bancassurer arm of the Royal Bank of Scotland. He then led a major change programme focussed on the distribution of Scottish Widows products into LloydsTSB branches before becoming Director of Strategy and Planning in 2002. In late 2004 Douglas set up a new Public Affairs team, focussing initially on ABI activity and the emerging new pensions white papers.
He is a Fellow of the Faculty of Actuaries and is a past tutor and examiner. Douglas graduated from Edinburgh University in Mathematics in 1972. He is married with three children and enjoys a variety of hobbies including golf and swimming.

Anthony Thompson, Head of Public Affairs

Anthony joined the public affairs team in December 2007. Based in London, he is focussed on supporting Scottish Widows’ Chief Executive, Archie Kane, in his role as ABI Chairman, as well as driving forward Scottish Widows’ government relations programme in Whitehall and Westminster.
Before joining Scottish Widows, he spent 7 years working for the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) in a variety roles, which included leading the pensions policy team and running the CBI’s parliamentary affairs unit, before heading up all European lobbying activity as Director of the CBI Brussels office.
Anthony graduated from Birmingham University with a BA in Russian in 1999 and was awarded an MSc in Social Policy & Planning from the London School of Economics in 2003.
Anthony is married with one daughter – and spends any spare time he has reading political biographies or following Newcastle United.

Andrew Cochran

Andy joined Scottish Widows in February 2001, and moved to our Public Affairs team when it was first set up in late 2004. Before this Andy worked in our Strategy Planning and Monitoring team working on project management throughout the company. Andy graduated in 2000 with a MA in Political Science from Manchester University.
Andy is responsible for ensuring Scottish Widows' position on key industry issues are up to date and that we are on top of all pertinent events and consultations. Andy also manages Scottish Widows relationship with the ABI, through the several committees on which our Board members sit, covering key industry issues. He is also heavily involved in lobbying in Scotland, and on issues relating to protection. In his spare time Andy takes part in triathlons.

Anne Brown
Anne joined Scottish Widows in January 2003. After 18 months working in Strategy Planning & Monitoring, Anne joined the newly established Public Affairs team that became an integral part of Corporate Communications in January 2005.
Anne worked for 10 years at the London School of Economics where her last role was Head of Executive & Professional Education and then at the American International University in Richmond where she was Director of Special Projects. Both roles required frequent worldwide travel helping both institutions develop and deliver substantial income generation schemes.
In Public Affairs Anne works closely with all of the think tanks with whom Scottish Widows collaborates and helps develop and deliver thought leadership events at Port Hamilton, Party Conferences and elsewhere. Currently the team are heavily engaged in promoting the Scottish Widows views on Pensions Reform, Protection and Savings & Investments.
